Making a Good Looking Text Link

This post is for students in Building Social Media Relationships. We use WordPress for our blogs.

Links are really important in blog posts. You use them to make it easy for people to find other related websites, and even other posts on your own blog.

Some blogging beginners (bloginners?) aren’t sure how to make nice looking links in their posts. For example, if you wanted to show people what a search for “puppies” looks like on Pinterest, you might write:

If you need cheering up, visit the puppies page on Pinterest at http://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=puppies&rs=rs&term_meta%5B%5D=puppies%7Crecentsearch%7C0.

Blarf.

That’s not an attractive web address, and it’s kind of bringing the look of our post down. It would be better to turn part of the sentence into a link instead. Like this:

If you need cheering up, visit the puppies page on Pinterest.

Much better.

Want to know how to work this magic in a WordPress post? Check out this short video.

The main steps are:

  1. Copy the web address (URL) of the page you’re linking to.
  2. Open your post for editing.
  3. Highlight the text you want to turn into the link.
  4. Click on the insert link button. (A pop-up box will appear.)
  5. Paste the web address into the box marked “URL.” (Don’t forget the http:// at the beginning.)
  6. Click on the add link button.
  7. Save your changes.

Give it a try. Using text links instead of “raw” web addresses makes your posts easier to read, and better looking too.
